  Breast Examination

Breast Cancer may develop in the interval period between mammography screenings. It is important to have breast examinations during the interval period.

Clinical Breast Examination (CBE)
CBE is an examination of your breasts by a doctor or nurse. Women aged 40 years and above should have CBE once a year.

Breast Self-Examination (BSE)
BSE is an examination of one’s own breasts.

Breast examinations should be done monthly from age 20 onwards. Do BSE one week after a period, when the breasts are less tender and lumpy. If you no longer have your period, choose a day that you will remember each month.

Step1: Look for changes to your breast in a mirror:

1) With your arms by your side.

2) With your arms raised above your head.

3) With your hands pressed firmly against your hips and your chest muscle tightened.

In each position, turn slowly from side to side and look for changes in the

1) Size or shape of your breasts
2) Nipples
3) Appearance of the skin (e.g. dimpling)

Step2: Feel for changes lying down.

1) Put a small pillow under your left shoulder.
2) Place your left hand under your head.
3) Use your right hand to examine your left breast. Hold your fingers flat to feel for lumps.
4) First feel your armpit. Start in the hollow of your armpit and work your way down towards your     breast. Use small circular movements to feel for any lumps.
5) Then start on the outside edge of your breast and feel around the whole breast in smaller and smaller     circles.
6) Finally feel behind the nipple.

Step3: Look for bleeding or discharge from the nipple.

1) Squeeze the nipple gently and see if there is any blood or discharge.

Step4: Repeat the procedure for the right breast using your left hand.
